Chick Blind

The chick blind everyone here grew up with, made to a proper width and hemmed rather than cut and left. Fine split bamboo, closely strung, hung outside the opening to take the sun before it reaches the glass.

Blocking heat outside the window is the whole trick: a blind hung inside stops the light but the heat is already in the room. This is the reason a verandah chick works better than any interior blind on a west wall.

Sunscreen: Cuts glare and heat but keeps the view out. You can still see through it in daylight.

Care and cleaning

Brush the dust off with a soft broom rather than washing it. Tie the bottom so wind cannot beat it against a railing, and roll it up before a storm.

Frequently asked questions

Can bamboo blinds be used on an open balcony?
Yes, and that is where they work best — the weave gives shade while letting air move, so a balcony stays usable instead of turning into a hot box. Two conditions: roll them up before heavy rain rather than letting them soak, and fix the bottom so the wind cannot slap them against the railing. Given both, a bamboo blind on a covered balcony lasts years. In driving rain with no cover, expect the reeds to split eventually.
Which blinds survive Dhaka humidity and monsoon splash?
Anything that does not mind getting damp: PVC and aluminium slats, PVC vertical louvres, and polyester roller fabrics all wipe clean and do not swell. Natural wood is the one to keep away from a window that takes rain, because repeated wetting warps the slats — faux wood gives the same look without that risk. For a bathroom or an open balcony, PVC or aluminium is the safe answer.
Can people see in through a sunscreen blind at night?
Yes, and this surprises people. Sunscreen mesh works by contrast: in daylight the bright side is outside, so you can see out and passers-by cannot see in. After dark the bright side is inside and that reverses — with the lights on, silhouettes are visible from the street. For a street-facing bedroom or a ground floor, pair sunscreen with a blackout blind on the same window, or choose a light-filtering fabric instead.
Is there a minimum size I get charged for?
Yes. A very small blind costs nearly as much to make as a medium one — the same tube, brackets, chain and labour — so every piece is billed at a minimum area regardless of how small the window is. The calculator on each product page shows you the moment the minimum is applied and by how much, so nothing is hidden inside a total.
