Zebra Blinds
A zebra blind — also sold as a day-and-night or dual-shade blind — is a roller blind made of alternating sheer and opaque stripes. Pull the chain and the two layers slide past each other. Line the solid stripes up and the window closes down to near-dark. Offset them and you get a band of filtered daylight at every level of the window.
That is the whole appeal: one blind covers the range that would otherwise need a sheer curtain plus a heavy one. In practice it is the blind people in Dhaka pick for a living room where the light changes all day, or a bedroom that has to work for an afternoon nap and a 9pm feed alike. The mechanism is a standard roller tube, so it stays shallow enough for a typical reveal and can be motorised on remote or WiFi.
Frequently asked questions
How does a zebra blind actually work?
The fabric is one continuous loop with alternating sheer and solid horizontal stripes, running over a roller tube. Pulling the chain moves the front layer against the back layer. When solid sits over solid, the window is closed and light drops to a dim glow. When solid sits over sheer, you get an even band of filtered daylight across the whole window instead of a single gap at the top or bottom, which is what makes it more useful than a plain roller in a room you use all day.
How do I clean a roller or zebra blind?
Lower the blind fully and go over both faces with a vacuum brush head or a dry microfibre cloth, top to bottom. Do that monthly and Dhaka dust never builds into a grey film. For a mark, dab with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, then leave the blind down until it is completely dry — rolling up a wet blind is what causes streaks and a musty smell. Never soak the fabric, never scrub, and never machine-wash a blackout blind: the coating on the back is what blocks the light and it will crack.
Do I measure inside the window frame or outside it?
Both are valid, and they give different results. An inside (reveal) mount looks tidier and keeps the sill usable, but a little light always escapes at the edges. An outside mount overlaps the frame by two to three inches on each side and is the only way to get a genuinely dark bedroom. How long does it take from order to installation?
Three days for a standard blind, five for a motorised one, counted from the day the order is confirmed to the day it is fitted. Those are working targets for stock fabric in Dhaka; a colour we have to bring in, or a very large made-to-order size, can add to them, and we tell you that when you order rather than afterwards.
