Blinds in Dhanmondi, Dhaka
Dhanmondi has the oldest building stock of the areas we cover regularly, and that changes the job. Alongside the newer apartment blocks there are a great many houses and low-rise buildings from the sixties and seventies, with steel-framed or timber-framed windows, shallow reveals, and openings that are rarely square by the time you measure them at three points.
Shallow reveals are the recurring issue. There is often not enough depth to mount a blind inside the frame without it fouling a handle or a security grille, so a lot of Dhanmondi windows end up as outside mounts, sized to overlap the frame. We measure for the grille as well as the glass, because a blind that cannot be lowered past a bar is worse than no blind.
The lake side has its own character: rooms that face the water want the view kept, and sunscreen or a zebra blind usually wins there over anything that closes the window down. Clinics and small offices along Satmasjid Road are the other steady stream of work, and those are almost always PVC verticals for cleanability.

Measuring and installation
Older buildings mean older walls: fixings into brick and lime plaster take longer than into concrete, so we allow extra time per window on a first-generation house. Street access on the lake-side lanes is narrow, and we carry in rather than trying to park close.
Frequently asked questions
Do I measure inside the window frame or outside it?
Both are valid, and they give different results. An inside (reveal) mount looks tidier and keeps the sill usable, but a little light always escapes at the edges. An outside mount overlaps the frame by two to three inches on each side and is the only way to get a genuinely dark bedroom. How long does installation take on the day?
A straightforward roller or zebra blind takes ten to fifteen minutes per window once the brackets are marked, so a four-window flat is usually done inside an hour. Concrete lintels, steel frames and outside mounts on tiled walls take longer because every fixing has to be drilled and plugged. Our team brings the drill, the plugs and a vacuum, and clears up before leaving.
My blackout blind still lets light in at the edges. Why?
Because "blackout" describes the fabric, not the installation. The cloth itself passes no light, but a blind mounted inside the reveal must be cut a few millimetres narrower than the opening in order to move, and daylight finds that gap. If total darkness is the goal, mount outside the frame with a two to three inch overlap on each side and a deeper drop below the sill. Say so before we measure and we will size it that way from the start.
